Dirk Schürjohann declares his love to CSS …

Interview: timo / 15. Juni 2005 /

Dirk SchürjohannDirk Schürjohann is a media designer from Berlin. He is about 27 years old and addicted to coffee. His favorite beans come from Indonesia (he loves Sumatra and Sulawesi), are prepared in French presses and used for DECAF°. While studying media he produced some films (you might view “Placebo“) before he fell in love with coffee and the Web.

Why do you love CSS?
Do I love CSS? Okay, you’re right. It’s obvious: the separation of content and design (HTML and CSS) is great, as well as bluescreens are for film makers. It’s not that I like Star Wars; horrible content and markup, but they did a good job in using CSS!
What drives you crazy when using CSS?
Besides Internet Explorer, which I’m sure that every web developer would like to get rid of, there is actually one thing that bugs me when using CSS: the fact that I tend to disregard the well structured form of my stylesheets. After I have finished working them out I let them
stick together as muddled as they are - unlike my markup, which is always clean (Lucas could learn from!).
Why should people write well structured / semantic markup?
It is useful to comply with standards and recommendations in order to achieve the purpose of one common basis for web publishing. Proprietary tags and sort of Netsie-IE Browser Wars have never been pretty conducive to the Web’s development. The current trend for all browsers is to
support standards, that makes it easy for authors, and to compete for technical features - not for proprietary tags! -, which makes it comfortable for users. However, writing websites will become more complex when further recommendations will be established. So, let’s get back to work, George, and be prepared!
