Jens Grochtdreis declares his love to CSS …

Interview: timo / 9. November 2005 /

Jens GrochtdreisJens Grochtdreis
works as a Web developer in Frankfurt (Germany). Besides comic books
and blues music he loves to read and write about the web, especially
web standards. With his weblog and CSS-FAQ he helps to spread the knowledge about modern web design. Jens founded WebKrauts for evangelizing Web standards in Germany.

Why do you love CSS?
I do love my wife. But I really like CSS, because it is a simple looking and relatively straight way to design a website. I think I fell in love with the concept of CSS because I am a lazy guy when it comes to maintaining or changing a website. With CSS you change the colors or font-families within seconds. With old-style layout-tables it could be hours. I had the feeling I could waste my time with more fun.
What drives you crazy when using CSS?
Especially IE of course. But in general it drives me crazy that there is a huge gap between theory and reality. It is a crying shame that each and every browser has a unique sight on CSS. It is not only between browsers but between versions, too. Is it really that complicated to programm a browser just the way it should be? The specs for XHTML, HTML and CSS are not really new to the programmers. But they don’t get it.
Why should people write well structured / semantic markup?
There are many reasons why one should write structured and semantic markup. First of all that is the way it was meant. HTML-documents was developed to structure the information within a document. Unfortunately most people do only think visually. But the main focus should be on the information. And if you read a correctly structures and CSS-styled document in a mobile device which is not capable of CSS there will still be the well-structured content. And if you structured the text semantically correct, everyone will be able to recognize lists, headings and paragraphs. Structuring a document well doesn’t do you any harm but helps you in every way.
