Veerle Pieters declares her love to CSS …

Interview: timo / 17. Juni 2005 /

Veerle PietersVeerle Pieters is a Belgian graphic/web designer who started out as a freelancer in 1992 and founded Duoh! n.v. in 2000. Since the end of 2003 Veerle discovered the beauty of CSS design and never looked back. A daily doses of soulful chill-out music is an essential component in her daily workflow. On her blog she shares her passion for CSS, web/graphic design, music, Apple etc.

Why do you love CSS?
The love only started after working my way through the learning curve.
The design opportunities it gives me are (almost) endless. It offers so much flexibility because CSS is the graphical skin on the structural code which offers a benefits for us all. Styling with CSS puts the fun back in styling the rather boring elements such as lists, quotes in text, text links etc. And an extra added bonus is the cleaner, lighter and more accessible code.
What drives you crazy when using CSS?
Mostly the lack of proper CSS support in Internet Explorer drives me mad. And finally after conquering all the (IE) bugs and delivering clean nice templates, it drives me mad if developers who implement my design into a CMS system crunch the semantic clean code with Microsoft specific code.
Why should people write well structured / semantic markup?
Web pages will be more accessible then when using non-semantic markup. They will load much faster since they are lighter. The site will be better ranked at search engines. If you want to be a professional you just owe it to yourself to do things right.
